TPACK Framework: The Challenge for the 21st Century Teachers

Throughout the history of English Language Teaching, there have been tremendous innovations and changes in Language Learning Theories, Language Teaching Methodologies, and Instructional Technologies. As the results of increased mobility and migration of the people, the concept of inner circle, outer circle, extended circle have been challenged by “world Englishes” or “Glocal English”. As an educator, English teachers need to innovate and find out ways to teach English communication skill to the millennium students in online or offline setting with different platforms (zoom, google meet, WhatsApp, Chatroom, Facebook, Virtual Reality, Pro-board discussion forum, pot case, etc.). The level of TPACK awareness of the teachers and its implications in related to instructional technology integration for the English Language Teaching are very pertinent. In this session, I shall first describe the challenge of Educators in the context of 21st century in which the innovations and changes of Instructional strategies are badly needed. I will argue that the teachers need to master not only the pedagogical, professional, personal, social skills but technological skill as well. Based on my experiences in giving workshop to hundreds of Indonesian teachers, I will demonstrate the importance of Technological knowledge and skill for an English teacher who should conduct on-line lesson assessment during the covid-19 pandemic.
