INTRODUCTION
The advancement of technology has indeed brought rapid changes and given rise to developments in many aspects of life. These changes and developments have also led to a shift in education, where the roles of educators and practitioners have also undergone significant changes. Teaching and learning tools and the materials have become diversified. Teaching and learning now take place in a borderless world of shared resources and learners have become ‘invisible’. These are some of the exciting transformations in education that should be embraced and further explored, especially in language teaching and learning as language is an essential part in communication which is an important requirement for employment and a key success factor in life. Moreover, as the world enters what has been termed as the Fourth Industrial Revolution or IR 4.0, language educators and practitioners need to be prepared and respond to the challenges brought by it. This makes language learning and teaching a fascinating area to explore in terms of the education shift and its global trends. Thus, in this regard, the Centre for Modern Languages & Human Sciences (CMLHS), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) is proud to organize its second international conference on language learning and teaching which will be held in the newly developed UMP campus in Pekan, Pahang.
Through this conference, CMLHS UMP aims to extend its partnership with relevant government agencies, as well as local and international organizations focusing on education and language education. In general, the conference aims to address the issues and approaches of transformative education in the area of language learning and teaching while at the same time reflecting on the positive impact of conventional approaches. While giving much focus on the issues of learning and teaching of both the Malay and the English languages, this conference also welcomes insights into the teaching and learning of other languages in the Southeast Asian region such as Indonesian, Thai, and Tagalog, other major Asian and African languages such as Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Turkish and Arabic as well as major European languages such as German and Spanish. Many of these languages are taught by CMLHS lecturers and teachers at both UMP Pekan Campus and UMP Gambang Campus in Pahang, Malaysia. The scope of this conference therefore covers aspects of language teaching and learning regardless of whether they involve second or foreign language teachers and learners.
